The House has approved a flat tax on Airbnb rental contracts in the amount of 21% for rentals up to 30 days. The decree – which must be turned into a law by June 23rd – requires Airbnb to report contract information to the Italian government and in lieu of adding the amount onto the hosts’ income tax, Airbnb will be responsible for paying the amount due based on the information the company provides.  Airbnb Italia and the Italian Real Estate Federation are up in arms about the new tax, while the Hotel Industry is pleased that the government is applying some kind of regulatory action to this kind of accommodation which had become easy and unaccountable income with detrimental effects on the hotel and hospitality sectors.
